Party Of One (Fat Cat Records) @ Kitty Cat Klub

l_cb9face663184dc6b1b5a7ab8cf629cc

Party of One

Party of One are a tight, angular and intriguing three-piece from the coldest state in the USA, Minnesota, and are based around the enigmatic presence of guitarist / songwriter Eric Fifteen.

As well as Eric on guitar and vocal duties, Party of One comprises Terrika Kleinknecht playing the bass and sometimes singing, and Geoff McCusick playing the drums. Geoff teaches fourth grade and Terrica teaches girls to play the drums, as well as playing the same in the Portland-based excellently named Pom Pom Meltdown.

Party of One have played round and about the Twin Cities, but not a lot beyond. A brief tour to the UK in March 2003 to coincide with their first FatCat album release ‘Caught In The Blast’ began their foray into the world beyond. A second single, ‘Snap You Like A Twig’ was released in February 2004, and was followed by another tour of the UK and Europe.

MUTEMATH @ First Avenue

Picture 12

There are plenty of reasons why October 17s MUTEMATH concert at First Avenue is one of the must-see shows of this fall, but perhaps the biggest reason is Darren King. Darren began his drumming career with the New Orleans based band Earthsuit. Now playing with MUTEMATH, King has perfected his craft and has become one of the most exciting drummers today. Darren is known for innovative drumming, along with combining electronic drum samples and his acoustic drums. However, Darren’s greatest asset is his energy. Known for creative solos, movement, and breaking things, King is a joy to watch. MUTEMATH vocalist and keyboardist Paul Meany is also known for his fair share of onstage acrobatics. If you want to not only hear great music, but also see a great visual performance, MUTEMATH is one of the must-see shows for this fall.

Sade Sade is the musical alias for Gabriel Saloman / GMS.

Within Sade Sade, Saloman investigates temporal abstractions, conceptual sound and gestural noise. There is a parallel concern with sound art as both liberating practice and praxis. Through the embodied production of sound and willful action, Saloman attempts to enact a transformation of space and a dissembling of false constructions of mind and body. The work furthers investigations into Saloman’s concepts of Psychedelic Anarchism by focusing specifically on Cathartic Entropy and Object Autonomy while simultaneously contextualizing his practice in the contemporary radical milieu.

In recent performances and recordings Sade Sade’s music has been composed of Tapes, Mixer Feedback, Guitar, Keyboards, and Voice. In particular Sade Sade has explored the use of field recordings, non-amplified electric guitar and processed blank cassettes.

Currently Saloman is a member of Yellow SwansDiadem with Aja Rose; Bleeder;Cexfucx; and is involved in various collaborations. He is also a member of Red 76; The Psych(A)Party; The New Kanata Lodge; and WOEVAN.

Rain Machine / Sharon Van Etten @ The Entry

Kyp Malone’s much anticipated solo project Rain Machine is set to be released September 22 on Anti-records. The provocative album art, created by Malone himself, is an appropriate indicator of the unique and defiantly personal music within. Rain Machine features ten unflinchingly original and emotional songs mixing elements of modern jazz, blue-grass and blistering guitar driven rock into a refreshing new sound. As singer and guitarist for celebrated band TV on the Radio, Malone proved himself both a captivating and delightfully unpredictable musical force. On Rain Machine, he shows himself a singer and a lyricist of startling talents. Malone recently described Rain Machine as “a nearly full spectrum of frequencies audible to the human ear, a reflection of a variety of emotions and situations real and imagined – some rhythm some rhyme.” In most instances such a statement could be dismissed as nothing more than playful hyperbole. This is not one of those times. Rain Machine is the sound of an extraordinary artist emerging into his own.
