This reunion show serves as a benefit for our friend, Lucas. Instead of going into detail in our own words, we will let you hear(read) it from him:

“Both my kidneys shut down, I need a transplant. When I get the transplant I’m automatically enrolled in Medicare. But there’s a 20% copay on a $250,000 procedure that I have to pay on my own. The cost of anti-rejection meds post-transplant could set me back a couple grand a month, and I’ve already wracked up a $4,000 bill for testing thus far.

I’m having the procedure done at the U of M Fairview medical center. There’s no transplant date as of yet, I need people that don’t mind giving me one of their kidneys to step up for testing. If no one matches, I get put on a national donor list. The average wait for that is 3 to 6 years…in which case, they’d put me on dialysis, and there’s a co-pay on that as well.

After being put on medicare, they drop me after 3 years, and I have to go through an independent insurance company to get covered for meds, which can run me around 350-1000 depending on my condition. Depending on what meds I’m taking and if my body doesn’t reject my kidney.”

A benefit for Scott and Carrie’s grand jury nightmare.

The Black Dog Cafe in St Paul is holding a benefit CD sale with live music on Sunday, December 6th from noon until 6 p.m. Twin Cities guitarist, composer, arranger, and producer Dean Magraw is an artist of extraordinary ability. Dean is recovering from a bone marrow transplant and has had to cancel all of his performances for the foreseeable future. This is the latest in a number of benefits that have been organized to help raise money for Dean’s living expenses. There are nearly a thousand brand new CD’s. Many are hard to find, some have never been available in the U.S before and they represent many different musical genres. You can name your price above the minimum $3 (per CD) donation. The music line-up includes Gabriel Hilmar, Michael Ziegahn Flamenco guitar with dancers (Dean was Michaels first guitar teacher), Jeff Ray on Slide/blues guitar, Raymond Yates and more to be announced.

This particular event has a French connection, Dean Magraw toured all over France several times with the group Next, created by François Corneloup with Dean, JT Bates, Chico Huff and Dominique Pifarély. He made many connections and got many fans and friends over there. His many friends over there worked with the French independent record label association Les Allumés du Jazz to collect a good selection of 600 CD’s from France and had them delivered to the Twin Cities to ofer them for this benefit. Local record labels and musicians have also donated hundreds of CD’s for this sale.

This is a great way to show your support for Dean and pick up a few holiday gifts and stocking-stuffers at the same time! The Black Dog will also donate 10% of all food and drink purchases to the cause.

Franklin Presents: On the Road with Dark Dark Dark

Music and Closing Event

Thursday October 29, 2009 at 8pm

In the spirit of Fischer’s interest in travel and the mythological American road trip, local chamber-folk band Dark Dark Dark will give a special performance, interlaced with their stories of floating down the Mississippi river on homemade rafts, discussions of special projects (see below), and projected images of life on the road.

In the last several years, Dark Dark Dark have become known as one of Minneapolis’ most talented musical acts, while simultaneously embarking on journeys across the country to play music and participate in exhibitions and collaborative projects, exchanging stability for a life of travel and adventure on the road.
Debuting Franklin’s new program of live events, Franklin Presents, band members Nona Marie Invie, Marshall LaCount, and Jonathan Kaiser will discuss their participation in Swimming Cities, an art boat project originating in Brooklyn, an upcoming film entitled Flood in which they are the featured subjects, participation in major exhibitions (at MassMoCA and the Van AbbeMuseum, the Netherlands), and collaborations with artists SWOON, Jay Heikes, Tim Piotrowski, Tod Seelie, Christian Rex VanMinnen, and filmmaker Bill Daniel.

For this closing event, Dark Dark Dark will perform amid the sculptural environment created by Fisher for Few Landmarks and No Boundaries, once more bringing the space alive with live music and stories of restlessness and adventure in celebration of the exhibition’s closing.
