Be Most Excellent – A Rock Band Charity Event *TONIGHT* @ 501 Club

bemostexcellent

In its inaugural year, Be Excellent to Each Other is presenting a charity benefit event for the rest of us – gamers, bikers, gutter punks, hipsters, art geeks, urban crafters, and all other burgeoning philanthropists – at Be Excellent to Each Other 2009, to be held on October 23 at The 501 Club in downtown Minneapolis.

The full proceeds from the event will be evenly distributed between the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota and Child’s Play, a national charitable organization that provides video games and systems for children’s hospitals. “We believe play is crucial to a child’s health because medical settings can be a new, unfamiliar world for children and teens,” says Annie Waters, Senior Annual Giving Officer at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics. “Often through play, a child can relax enough to express feelings or fears about medical experiences. We are grateful to the organizers and supporters of Be Excellent to Each Other for providing these opportunities to encourage children to play while they are with us for care.”

This is a 21+ event and there is no cover charge; however, attendees will have a variety of opportunities to donate to the benefitting organizations:

  • Play Rock Band and The Beatles: Rock Band on the stage at The 501 Club – lights, full sound, and a roaring audience fueling your rock ambitions!
  • Listen to DJ Jake Rudh of TRANSMISSION between sets of Rock Band throughout the night.
  • Bid on amazing drawing prizes and silent auction scores from great local donors like the Minnesota RollerGirls, Robot Love, Game Informer, Adam Turman, and many other bars, restaurants, and boutiques. Art, sculptures, collectibles, and games have also been supplied by 2K Games, Square Enix, Electronic Arts, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim staple The Venture Bros., and original pages from the latest run of the Green Lantern comic books, with tons of other great items!
  • Just come and drink for the kids – The 501 Club is donating 10 percent of the bar tab for the night to the two charities, so every beer and cocktail really helps!
  • Watch bands, teams and groups you know and love play Rock Band. They may rock harder than you, but they very well might not. Look for performances by the Minnesota RollerGirls and your favorite local bands. The lineup will be posted on the website prior to the event.

Aesthetic Apparatus Exhibits At 501
Can’t spell Aesthetic? Can’t spell Apparatus? Better learn! Because the 501 Club is exhibiting Expressive Works, incredible screen prints by dynamic graphic design and screen printing duo Dan Ibarra and Michael Byzewski, whose company goes by the name – Aesthetic Apparatus.
501 patrons and performers may already be familiar with some of AA’s band posters. They have designed and printed concert posters for bands such as Cake, Frank Black, Spoon, The Hold Steady, The New Pornographers, Dinosaur Jr, Grizzly Bear, Vivian Girls, The Decemberists, Bob Mould, Mark Mallman, Lucinda Williams and more.
Dan and Michael founded Aesthetic Apparatus around 1999 in Madison, Wisconsin, they say, as a fun side project from their real jobs. Their bio further states that “Over the years their limited edition, screen printed concert posters have secretly snuck into the hearts and minds of a small, rather silent group of socially awkward music and design nerds. Now, Aesthetic Apparatus is a full time, full-fledged, insanely unstoppable, and occasionally award winning design mega-studio. They will break your heart and drink your blood.”
Expressive Works by Aesthetic Apparatus is the third in Jon Oulman’s ongoing exhibition program at the 501 Club. This new venue opened with a show by graffiti-based stencil artists John Grider and Mike Fitzsimmons of Broken Crow, then was followed by 20th Century Works on Paper, War and Propaganda from Jon Oulman’s personal art collection.

This exhibit will be installed in time for Pet Rock (Fundraiser for The Pet Project), an all-day music and food event at the 501Club starting at noon on Saturday, September 26. All works in the exhibit are for sale.
