OX-OP ARTS PRESENTS:
Non Consensual Post Dada Constructivist Cerebral Warts
Art/Music/Film Festival 2009OCTOBER 22nd- 25th • SOO Visual Arts Center
On October 22nd through 25th, SOOVAC Gallery will host a conceptual tour de force seldom seen outside the two coasts.
The large main Gallery will feature a major retrospective of two hometown Minneapolis heroes of the international flatstock design and printing world: Burlesque of North America and Aesthetic Apparatus.
The side gallery will present a bizarre opening of local artist and alternative music mogul, HAZE XXL. A multi-media onslaught, the exhibition consists of 100 individually hand-made art CD sleeves, each containing original art and individual Polaroids, along with HAZE XXL created objects d’art featured in numerous national shows including the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. The show marks the first and only release of the Halo Of Flies/Gay Witch Abortion collaboration album. Just 100 CD’s produced, and that’s it forevermore but not surprising coming from the former head of Amphetamine Reptile Records who initiated his label by originating the whole “limited edition thing in music” back in the 1980′s.
Each night of the four-day event, performance art takes on a literal meaning with live music sequestered in yet another gallery within the gallery. The musicians will be performing behind large screened windows facing the main gallery, harshly backlit so that the audience sees only silhouetted shadows and movement. Four security cameras inside the room will broadcast those performances live onto screens in the main gallery, playing with perceptions of time and space and lessening even further our distinctions between reality and the alternate broadcast reality which is far to often blurred.
The Opening Event will also offer an additional layer of altered perception, featuring the short films of renowned artist Chris Mars. Primarily known for his deeply surreal oil and pastel images, he has taken to animation
and film with all the intensity and incredible detail of his oil paintings.ART SHOWS

9pm showtimeThis is Grant’s first album in 10 years, and it’s a good one. Half of it was recorded in Montreal with members of Godspeed You Black Emperor, the other half was cut at Mike Wisti’s studio here in town. I think it sounds fantastic, and if you’re a fan of his songwriting you won’t be disappointed. The CDs will be ready in time for the show, but the vinyl will be delayed a bit — it’s intended to be a 180 gram pressing, and the pressing plant got their wires crossed and rolled out the test presses on regular weight vinyl — but what the fuck, come on down anyhow.
Lookbook will be releasing their first full length record tonight @ The Kitty Cat Klub in Dinkytown, Minneapolis.
Grant Cutler and Maggie Morrison both come from a long list of former bands. I’m not sure quite what to expect but I hope there is more of their up-beat jams on the new record. If the new video (made by Bo Hakala) below is any indication then get your dancing shoes to the Kitty Cat Klub tonight. Zoo Animal and Shahs open..

hot press from the *ahem* label:
“The “solo effort” these days has become just another thing we’ve come to expect and promptly forget, like new kid’s breakfast cereals. Guitarist Adam Burt (STNNNG, Total Fucking Blood, The Vets) however has coughed up something pretty super and original to lay into with his Blackcloud Stallionheart thang and debut disc, 2009.
Appearing suddenly as an alarmingly curious songcrafter who deadpan baritones his way through simple hooks and lyrics, Burt’s preoccupations seem to float around themes like mysticism, old testament name-checkin’, science, and pop politics. His guitar playing, both acoustic and electric, would feel quite at home alongside a variety of other stylists at any given point on the 30 minute record (Ben Chasny, Richard Thompson, Joe Satriani, classic Popul Vuh’s Conny Veit, and more song-style Ranaldo/Moore are a few that pop into the head), but the whole god-dang unified thing lightly rambles and shambles along with its own open-chord, strummy boldness that is really beautiful. This is- as they say- a guitarist’s guitar album, but it’s also a songwriter’s album. You will also hear on this recording some minimal accompanying instrumentation breaking up the gaps and filling the pleasant rhythm box. It’s silly and meditative at once, and it is also just so very awesome.
Excellent mixing by Neil Weir, masterful design and art by Hannah Haugberg, and precision screen-printing by Danimal Graphixxx”
