GZA: When it comes to thought provoking, street-bred raw lyricism, the Wu-Tang Clan’s fountain of wisdom, GZA takes his job very seriously. GZA’s metaphoric and multi-layered lyrics are often touted by critics as his rap name implies; genius.

MUJA MESSIAH:Thee Adventures Of A B-Boy D-Boy (Black Corners)
The differences between mainstream and underground rap have always been a bit tenuous, as mainstream is often more political and message-based than it gets credit for, while underground hip-hop’s misogyny and regressive themes tend to get ignored. Muja Messiah shatters the implicit split between the two camps, deftly crafting a hip-hop masterpiece that combines indie’s nuance and honesty with mainstream’s swagger and charisma. Muja makes sure to differentiate himself from the area’s famed emo rap while continuing to rep his city hard (Messiah has the letters MPLS—spelled out in guns, swords, and dollar signs—tattooed on his neck). In lead single “Get Fresh,” he takes on those who are “backstabbin’ my city / like it’s all backpackin’ and hippies / like it ain’t crackin’ in my city.” With a winsome flow, Muja covers everything: cocaine deals and money-fetish materialism, progressive politics and introspective thoughts, dark reminiscences, well-spun punchlines. The album is refreshingly multifaceted, exactly the kick in the pants hip-hop needed. – AV Club -The Onion- Best of The Decade

10PM – ALL AGES
@ XXXUSA

On their way to the East Coast to open a Trans Am tour..

Nice Nice (MySpace) (of Portland, OR)

Formally carrying the name Nice Nice since 1999, guitarist Jason Buehler and percussionist Mark Shirazi have been playing music together for over ten years. Their intense rhythmic dialogue heard in their songs speaks volumes about the connection between the two as they layer runaway melodies and free-form noise into some of the most creative beat-based rock music you will ever hear. It’s not unrealistic to assume that you’ve never heard anything like it, as most everyone that’s ever witnessed their awe-inspiring live shows is left speechless, with nothing to compare it to. Most shocking is the fact that it’s largely improvisational and always live. No overdubs, no samples. Certainly not the first band to successfully trap virtuoso playing into loops that you can dance to, Nice Nice has definitely done so with the least amount of pretense, making it both intellectually stimulating and fun as hell to listen to. They say it, we believe it, and that settles it!

David Daniell and Douglas McCombs first met in early 2006 while touring as members of Rhys Chatham’s
six-guitar Die Donnergötter band. Following that tour, the two spent several months trading albums and
discussing making music together; they began their musical collaboration when Daniell moved from New
York to Chicago later that year to study pedal steel guitar.

These humble beginnings do little to reflect the depth and breadth of each of their talents; both are
highly-respected musicians within their circles. Over the years Daniell has collaborated with many
notable musicians, including Loren Connors, Rhys Chatham, Tim Barnes, Jeph Jerman, Thurston Moore,
Greg Davis, and Jonathan Kane, as well as releasing numerous albums under his own name and with his
band San Agustin on labels such as Table of the Elements and Family Vineyard. McCombs is more often
seen wielding a bass guitar, whether as a member of Eleventh Dream Day, the acoustic collective Pullman,
or the pioneering and inimitable Tortoise; in his role as the driving force behind Brokeback; or through his
varied work with the likes of Tom Ze, Azita Youseffi, Will Oldham, Yo La Tengo, and Calexico

RED DAUGHTERS

I suggest you catch these dudes in town while you still can. They seem the type that would split to the woods for the weekend and never come back..

Regardless the twangy, organ-heavy jams are a breath of fresh air in Minnesota where it seems the forecast is heavy on the hip-hop, 80’s synth-pop and dork-folk. Red Daughters fit the bill to catch waves on The Current but would also fit nicely in the middle of KQRS airplay.

“Red Daughters are serving up some ballsy countrified rock-and-roll true to the Minnesota soil that bred Dylan.” -Tripwire

lasco stroud

**late add on this show will feature lasco stroud from Madison, WI. Fronted by St. Paul native Issac Wexler-Mann, Lasco Stroud stop in Saint Paul on a brief Midwest tour..
