The weather was perfect on Friday for an outdoor show, and I was actually fairly impressed with the crowd’s behavior (there was practically no line for beer!). I caught Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Spoon, and Weezer, all of which put on a great act. The only bummer of the night was that for some reason, no local photographers were let into the photo pit at the last minute for Weezer. Thanks to Stacy Schwartz for letting me use her telephoto for a few shots.

Walker Open Field/Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Soak in the sun and take in the sounds of Tapes ‘N Tapes, Eyedea & Abilities, Total Babe, and four high school bands on the Walker’s rolling hillside. This daylong festival of music brings high school musicians into the mix with established bands, rappers, and performers.
In addition to featured acts on the main stage, bring your best music mixes to trade in a mix tape exchange, create your own musical instruments in our art-making tent, and make connections or learn more about the professional arts community at the Young Artists Resource Fair. Presented by the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC).
Lookbook/Bight Club/Zoo Animal/Slapping Purses @ First Avenue 6/18/2010
For the first time Lookbook headlined the main room at First Avenue for a great homecoming show after a three week tour. I caught Bight Club and Lookbook but missed Slapping Purses and Zoo Animal as I needed to eat an inside out burger over at First Ave’s new restaurant The Depot. Bight Club is definitely a local act to watch, they’re playing The Hexagon next month as well as some other gigs. The energy Lookbook brought to the stage was the highest I’ve ever seen it, no doubt they were charged up about headlining the main room. See my pics below.

Lucy Michelle & The Velvet Lapelles @ Memory Lanes Block Party 2010
Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles played their last show until this fall at the Memory Lanes Block Party in Seward. The band just wrapped their latest album last week at the Terrarium in Northeast and will be on hiatus as Lucy spends the summer in Colorado. Light rain fell during the second half of their set, no one in the crowd seemed to mind.
Mumford & Sons @ The Varsity Theater 5/26/2010
Minneapolis’ current (pardon the pun) favorite band played to a very sold out and very sweaty crowd last night at The Varsity Theater in Dinkytown. Despite the temperature inside the venue hitting the 80s, the crowd was absolutely delighted to host the band in our fair city.
Family of the Year @ 400 Bar 5/15/2010
LA-based darlings Family of the Year played the 400 Bar Saturday night opening up for Clem Snide. The show was the last stop on their tour and the playing was tight and memorable. If you haven’t heard Family of the Year yet, be sure to check them out. You can download their album Songbook free off their website.
GAYNGS at First Avenue
Local supergroup GAYNGS played two shows at First Avenue on Friday to excited crowds of Twin Citizens decked out in prom gear. The night was pretty perfect, and Prince even made a brief appearance (though he didn’t play).
