Drummer extraordinaire Dave King (The Bad Plus,Happy Apple) returns to Making Music to preview his weekend of shows at the Walker Art Center, King for Two Days. Our conversation will focus on his newest collaboration projects, Golden Valley Is Now, and The Dave King Trucking Company, which will premiere as part of the weekend’s music extravaganza March 12 & 13. Special live guest cameos expected…

Co-presented with the Walker Art Center.

A great tribute night to two of jazz’s most legendary composers…MONK & MINGUS.

Monk In Motian pays homage to the music of Thelonious Monk in the style and instrumentation of drummer Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop Band. This features two guitars, two saxophones, electric bass, and drums, and no piano.

Like MIM, Poutums Trio Mingus Tribute approaches the music of Charles Mingus in a unique way, as a trio…a format that is not typically associated with the composer more known for larger ensemble arrangements. Nonetheless, Linz, Thomson, and Ikeda know just how to capture the essence of these great tunes.

Songwriter, danielleinfelder got his first taste of frontmandom in his late teens, at the lyrical helm of progressive rock outfit, Last of the Dinosaurs (members of Tapes ‘n Tapes, Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles). Quite satisfied with the experience, he taught himself how to play the guitar after LOTD’s dissolution. The result: a handful of original compositions and the urge to play in public. With the accompaniment of old friends, Matt Schiebe, Kyle Christensen, and Joe Berlin, mondOmega kicks out thoughtful literate jams. If the personal is political, then mondOmega is a manifesto. Songs about life, songs about love, songs about Haiti.

Jacob Wick – trumpet, brooklyn
his playing has been described as everything from “inhuman”

Jacob’s visit to minneapolis coincides with the final leg of his project

Aaron Zarzutzki – no-output turntable, chicago
Aaron Zarzutzki is a improviser of various sorts. He works primarily with
misuse and perversion of objects and systems. Virtuosity, volatility,
futility, and capability are thought of. Zarzutzki currently lives, works,
and plays in Chicago.

Wilson Shook – alto saxophone, seattle
Wilson is the director of Gallery 1412, an artists’ collective and
performance space, and is a member of the Seattle Improvised Music board
of directors.
