Aesthetic Apparatus Exhibits At 501
Can’t spell Aesthetic? Can’t spell Apparatus? Better learn! Because the 501 Club is exhibiting Expressive Works, incredible screen prints by dynamic graphic design and screen printing duo Dan Ibarra and Michael Byzewski, whose company goes by the name – Aesthetic Apparatus.
501 patrons and performers may already be familiar with some of AA’s band posters. They have designed and printed concert posters for bands such as Cake, Frank Black, Spoon, The Hold Steady, The New Pornographers, Dinosaur Jr, Grizzly Bear, Vivian Girls, The Decemberists, Bob Mould, Mark Mallman, Lucinda Williams and more.
Dan and Michael founded Aesthetic Apparatus around 1999 in Madison, Wisconsin, they say, as a fun side project from their real jobs. Their bio further states that “Over the years their limited edition, screen printed concert posters have secretly snuck into the hearts and minds of a small, rather silent group of socially awkward music and design nerds. Now, Aesthetic Apparatus is a full time, full-fledged, insanely unstoppable, and occasionally award winning design mega-studio. They will break your heart and drink your blood.”
Expressive Works by Aesthetic Apparatus is the third in Jon Oulman’s ongoing exhibition program at the 501 Club. This new venue opened with a show by graffiti-based stencil artists John Grider and Mike Fitzsimmons of Broken Crow, then was followed by 20th Century Works on Paper, War and Propaganda from Jon Oulman’s personal art collection.

This exhibit will be installed in time for Pet Rock (Fundraiser for The Pet Project), an all-day music and food event at the 501Club starting at noon on Saturday, September 26. All works in the exhibit are for sale.

New Venue: 501 Club

Sound familiar? The owner of the 331 Club, Jarret Oulman, plans to open a new venue/bar twice the size of the NE mainstay in downtown Minneapolis..

Here is the story from Vita.mn (Chris Riemenschneider)

331 goes 501

Here’s proof that one club owner is doing well: The 331 Club’s Jarret Oulman plans to open a sister venue in downtown Minneapolis in April. Oulman already has signed a lease on the site that used to be VikingMatt Birk‘s namesake restaurant, Matty B’s, at 501 Washington Av. S. Hence the name: The 501 Club. He doesn’t plan to close his northeast Minneapolis spot, with its always-free mix of indie-folk and none-of-the above music. The 501 will expand on that formula with a twice-bigger space and food service. “It should be easier this time because we figured out the nuances of no-cover programming and we have access to a lot more performers,” Oulman said.
