DOSH / SKOAL KODIAK @ THE CEDAR

Consider it a testament to Martin Dosh’s electronic wizardry that his live show is somehow more impressive than his intricate, layered records. He doesn’t just recreate his complex collages of looped audio; he composes something new on the fly, surrounded by banks of keyboards and samplers. Dosh’s 2008 album Wolves And Wishes, his fourth solo disc, follows his familiar method of building soundscapes through a careful rearrangement of live improvisation with collaborators. Recently, much of Dosh’s time has gone into his stellar musical partnership with Andrew Bird, but a new Dosh album is on the horizon, which finds him working with Happy Apple’s Mike Lewis, Bird, and a host of other collaborators. It’ll be titled Tommy, in tribute to Dosh’s recently deceased friend and sound engineer Tom Cesario. – AVClub

John Henry mentions this show on NPR this morning. Listen Here.

Haunted House 'Guess Who's Not Coming To Dinner' Album Release Shows

With “Guess Who’s Not Coming to Dinner,” Haunted House prove they aren’t just another Minneapolis All-Star jam band. They are a formidable rock and roll unit lead fearlessly by Mike Watton. Band members and collaborators include, yet are not limited to Jon Davis (Ghostband), Adam Patterson (whitesand/badlands), Cole Claerhout (Dante & The Lobster), Martin Dosh (Andrew Bird), and Freddy Votel. (Skoal Kodiak)

They are an unrivaled, rhythm-heavy rock orchestra. A piano-heavy Pixies or maximal Modest Mouse draw comparisons but don’t nearly describe the freak fluency they share..

Here are some details about the release shows from Mike..

Capgun Coup from Omaha has been added to the October 30th Hexagon bill. Knife World was so stunned by the invite they were rendered speechless. So the line-up is, in no particular order since I’m not sure how that’s going to shake out, but this is my best guess:

Vampire Hands
Haunted House
Capgun Coup
Mute Era

FREE – 21+

Full line-up for the Halloween, and I have no idea the order:

An Ali Farka tribute band
Tender Meat
Ratt Poison
Awesome Snakes
Japanther
Haunted House

Walker Art Center presents…BLK JKS @ The Cedar

Thursday, September 24, 2009
9:00 pm
Cedar Cultural Center
416 Cedar Avenue South, Minneapolis
$15 ($12 Walker and Cedar members); $18 ($15) day of show
Doors open at 8:00 pm

With a wrecking-crew rhythm section, debonair vocals, and a guitar concoction that’s one part shred and two parts soul, it’s easy to understand why South Africa’s BLK JKS took music mega-gathering SXSW by storm last year. Now on its debut U.S. tour, the band shoots an African musical sensibility through the tenets of rock, electronic, and soul, reclaiming styles that have been stolen, watered down, and regurgitated for generations. BLK JKS’s fresh, forward rhythms, layered harmonies, elliptical guitar vernacular, and infectious urban Zulu mbaqanga blues combine in a swirl of experimentation and tribal energy. Catch the newest voice in African music’s 21st-century sound on this blistering opening night of the Cedar Cultural Center’s four-day Global Roots Festival. – (Walker Art Center, Buy Tix)
