Deerhoof @ First Avenue
Deerhoof shortly followed. The set spanned most of the Deerhoof catalogue but drew heavily on the their recent offering “Offend Maggie”. Matsuzaki played Tambourine on opener “Basketball Get Your Groove Back” but picked up her Hoffner immediately thereafter. They played a lot of guitar heavy songs, highlighting recent addition, Ed Rodriguez on guitar, picking up where Chris Cohen left off.
They played ample material from “Friend Opportunity” and “Runners Four”, “Giga Dance” from “Milk Man” and one of my favorites “Holy Night” from their album “Reveille“. The set left me wanting more, as did the four song encore.
Material from “Offend Maggie” sounded great live, drummer Greg Saunier was happy to hear this. “This is the first record we’ve done that we could perform the songs as a band live before we started work in the studio” explains Saunier, “We did very little overdubbing, and we could actually see each other playing”. This would account for the sound and feel of the new record, more straight foreword than previous efforts. This and the fact that Jay Pellicci who recorded “Offend Maggie” is mixing all of their live shows basically guaranteed that the show would sound great.
Highlights: Deerhoof is notorious for combining songs to great effect. Last night “Offend Maggie” gem “Snoopy Waves” segued seamlessly into “Dummy Discards a Heart”. Brilliant.” – Geoff Freeman
