The Polish Pugilist
(a postdramatic production by Jeremey Catterton)
August 19-28th* Thursday, Friday, Saturday @ 8pm

The Polish Pugilist is a postdramatic performance triptych conceived by Jeremey Catterton that performs August 19-28 (Thursday-Saturday) at a downtown Minneapolis location revealed upon ticket reservation. Inspired by Upton Sinclair’s classic anti-capitalist text The Jungle and the equally classic movie Rocky, by Sylvester Stallone, writer and director Catterton draws on both sources from 1904 and 1976 to comment on the related states of capitalism and immigration in 2010. The performance features installation, lighting, and fashion design by some of Minneapolis’ freshest young visual artists, as well as an eclectic ensemble of performers from the local music, theatre, and dance scene.

Abandoning a narrative sequence of first, second, and third acts, The Polish Pugilist instead creates a production formed by three acts of: Left, Center, and Right. It is a performance-triptych that asks the audience to contemplate each moment in relation to the other “panels” of the performance. Each panel is on a different floor of the same building so as to focus the plays concerns through different methodologies. The Right panel is Absent; an empty space prone to silence. The Center panel is Abundant; space with a plethora of items that accumulate without cemented meaning. The Left panel conveys an Abundant space that is both labyrinth and meticulous, laden with value and meaning. Designed to confuse, challenge, provoke, and illuminate, these panels comprise The Polish Pugilist.

NOTE: * This performance will feature an ASL interpreter. The production team for The Polish Pugilist are very proud to offer these performances to the deaf and hearing-impaired community of Minneapolis; the interpretation and its role within the performance is integrated into the production as a whole.ASL interpreted performances will be on 8/19, 8/21, 8/26, 8/27, 8/28 .
