THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW

THE KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW (In The Red Records) – mp3
The King Khan & BBQ Show is the most revered band in their scene, and there are many reasons why. It all started in 2003, BBQ visiting King Khan, and jamming out their black magick in his Nazi-bunker rehearsal space. Songs flowed endlessly like blood from a cancerous abcess. They took it easy, honing their craft, playing sporadically to crowds outraged by their incredible sound and nasty live show. Orgiastic, anarchic, hypnotic and personal are the shows to this day.

ART BRUT

ART BRUT
They’re an eccentric, motley bunch who have more in common with Half Man Half Biscuit and Pulp than they do with their oft-compared influences The Fall. Vocalist Eddie Argos (an ex-goth obsessed with Jonathan Richman and Vincent Van Gogh) had previously been in a band, The Art Goblins, in his hometown of Bournemouth. Their stage show would see him playing a vacuum cleaner and escaping from a sack. They sounded not unlike cult Glaswegians The Yummy Fur and had songs such as I Wanna Be Johnny Dean and Disco. Another project was The Welsh Elephant, who penned the should-be-classic Fuck The MSP (which contains the catchy refrain Nicky Wire can suck my cock!)

SURFER BLOOD
West Palm Beach indie outfit Surfer Blood, formerly known as TV Club, revives the same lo-fi, post-punk qualities that Joy Division embodied. The band’s a little 1980s, a little experimental, and at times, more than a little melancholic. Beyond all the gloomy stuff, though, Surfer Blood’s songs are catchy as hell and incorporate Of Montreal-style harmonies that mitigate its maudlin mood. – Erica Landau, New Times

FRIGHTENED RABBIT

HEADLIGHTS

FRIGHTENED RABBIT - mp3

You are currently reading about Frightened Rabbit. They are a band who live in Glasgow and have done for some time. They record in bedrooms, cupboards and kitchens. Anyone can be in Frightened Rabbit. They have played some live shows in this city, but want to meet people from other cities, in order that they can come and blow into tubes when they play live. Lets keep pop music alive by getting it out of that dress and into a sweater.

HEADLIGHTS - mp3

Headlights are at the forefront of the resurgent scene happening in the twin cities of Champaign-Urbana. By exhibiting an uncanny ability to merge electronics with the barest of pop elements, they carve a unique niche for themselves that falls nicely between My Bloody Valentine and The Postal Service. Originally released as a limited edition CD EP, the band sold over 1,500 copies of “The Enemies EP” through two national tours and sales on the Polyvinyl web site. This release paves the way for their forthcoming full-length. Headlights have played with The Delgados, Headphones, Mates Of State, Mono, Crooked Fingers, Earlimart, and Explosions In The Sky.

FREE ENERGY (EX HOCKEY NIGHT – DFA RECORDS)

Props go to Music For Robots for introducing me to this ridiculously catchy glam-pop track from Philly’s Free Energy. The band are playing a few shows this summer (including a couple in NYC at Mercury Lounge) and with fantastic songs like “Dream City”, I’m sure they’ll won’t have a problem earning fans. The song is T. Rex rock riffs meets 60’s soul meets Polyphonic Spree-like jubilance with a saxophone solo thrown in for good measure. It’s one of the instantly gratifying, genuine fun songs I’ve heard in a while.

BLACK DICE
WOLF EYES
ADIDAS

BLACK DICE
Black Dice is a noise rock/experimental band based in Brooklyn, New York, USA. They formed in spring, 1997 at the Rhode Island School of Design and are currently signed to DFA Records. The group began as a harsh, noisy thrash outift, with a sound far different from the more psychedelic leanings of the last few albums.
WOLF EYES
Since getting their start in the cassette underground in 1997, Wolf Eyes have produced over 40 releases, each archiving a beautifully troubling practice. With an approach to music akin to Vienna Actionism or a second-generation snuff film, Wolf Eyes bleed analog, mark their territory with piss, and shout all crazed over layers of sirens and random pulses. Aaron Diloway (Hanson Records), John Olson (American Tapes), and Nate Young (who builds much of Wolf Eyes’ equipment) are Ann Arbor, Michigan’s most interesting band, and the town’s most explosive assault on regularity since Negative Approach busted up in 1984, or perhaps since John Brannon’s post-Negative Approach act Laughing Hyenas hit their peak around 1990. Their songs are a churning mass in the continually evolving oeuvre of one of the underground’s most important tweaked-out bands. Outside any historical context, it force-feeds you, one by one, the screeching souls of those crickets you tortured as a kid.
