Bass Drum of Death – Spare Room (MP3)
from WeeklyTapeDeck.com
Just one of the many Oxford, MS natives that you will probably hear us talk about in the future. Focusing on John Barret’s Bass Drum of Death, I’m sure the initial imagery points to a metal-manic face-painted macabre. While they do play heavy (and loud), BDoD is quite the contrary. I promised myself to refrain from referring to any music as shit-gaze, but they just fit in so well with bands that are coined as, er, with that term. John just sent over this new tune that is just as grainy but steps back from their usual avalanche pace (I swear October must be Ronettesappreciation month). Check for “Spare Room” to appear on their upcoming 7″ on brand new Nashville label, Baby Don’t (yeah, you see if you can google search it!). Also, they will be carrying a run of 50 cassettes for their upcoming tour with Lover!XX

Vampire Hands / The Blind Shake / Birthday Suits @ Turf Club
“every year this show kicks ass and last night was no different. Everyone was great and it was good to see that others seemed as exhausted from the last few days as I felt.
This show is an example of how to at the very least tolerate if not enjoy MN winters. No one in the bands last night stayed home whining about their lives or other shit but got up and kicked out the jams.” – Tom Loftus

Vampire Hands invented patriots.
It’s the first weekend of a brand, spanking new year. Could there be any better time to plant your feet firmly in our cities’ loudest, most bracing musical pleasures? For three years running, the Turf Club has hosted a showcase of our finest guild of musicians on the first weekend of a new year, and this lineup is potent enough to make all those worn out Thursdays you spent nursing a beer in the Clown Lounge seem like a distant cloud of erasures.
None of these bands want for attention or description– their ascents to the top of this glorious scrapheap have been well cataloged in all manner of local media. But in the event that the Gimme Noise readers are uninitiated and have resolved to make 2009 a year of music, this show will make for an excellent primer.
