MONOTAKEN FROM THEIR WIKIPEDIA ENTRY: Mono are a Japanese instrumental rock band, formed in 1999 in Tokyo, Kantō, Honshū. The band consists of Takaakira Goto (electric guitar), Yoda (electric guitar), Tamaki Kunishi (bass guitar, electric guitar, piano, glockenspiel), and Yasunori Takada (drum kit, glockenspiel, synthesizer). On a personal note, MONO are one of the Triple Rock’s favorite bands. MONO easily are in the top five truly great experiences that I have personally had here in my 6 years. TOBACCO, HIGH PLACES, HOOD INTERNET @ TRIPLE ROCK

TOBACCO (OF BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW)Tobacco sometimes runs with a group called Black Moth Super Rainbow. On Fucked Up Friends, his latest mission, he works alone. Tobacco’s tools are analog synths, tape machines, and deformed incantations from throats unknown. His music is a wash of distortion and melody over jagged beats. It amalgamates hypnotic, cosmopolitan pop, gritty, propulsive hip-hop and a night full of fevered dreams. It buoys the spirit, braces the nerves, and smuggles disoriented paranoia deep into the subconscious. These are anxiously driven, effortlessly smooth and unapologetically badass sounds of inner nature. It’s not that Brooklyn’s High Places remind me of a lot of things I like already — minimal, bleary indie pop like Beat Happening or Young Marble Giants; subaqueous psychedelia from Ricardo Villalobos to Martin Denny exotica; girlish nursery-rhyme vocals; New York City; heavy syncopation; pentatonic scales; kissing — it’s that I usually only get to have them all together when I’m dreaming. High Places sing about dreaming. They sing about dreaming and evolution and writing letters — to Mars, I think! — and even though they sing about the haze of falling in love on ‘Head Spins’, the closest they come to sex is watching hermaphroditic banana slugs swap sperm while clouds roll overhead. This all happens in about nine minutes. Sure, they have a handful of other songs that they play live, but High Places are a relatively small, embryonic band, literally and metaphorically. There are only two members, Rob Barber and Mary Pearson. They clink on glasses and hit hand drums and adorn them with spare guitar figures before sending everything through basic effects processors. The Hood Internet is a Chicago-based duo specializing in mashups of hip-hop (from the mainstream to the underground) with indie rock. They also run a blog of the same name through which they release their music, a venture that helped them earn notability as a minor internet phenomenon. The Hood Internet is composed of Aaron Brink (aka ABX) and Steve Reidell (aka STV SLV). [1] $10.00 ADVANCE TICKETS / $12.00 AT THE DOOR Also appearing: THE HOOD INTERNET |
GZA/GENIUS @ TRIPLE ROCK

GZA/GENIUS
GZA: When it comes to thought provoking, street-bred raw lyricism, the Wu-Tang Clan’s fountain of wisdom, GZA takes his job very seriously. The way he crafts his double-edged rhyme flow mirrors the skill and precise technique of one who works with fine ceramics. GZA’s metaphoric and multi-layered lyrics are often touted by critics as his rap name implies; genius.
MUJA MESSIAH:Thee Adventures Of A B-Boy D-Boy (Black Corners)
The differences between mainstream and underground rap have always been a bit tenuous, as mainstream is often more political and message-based than it gets credit for, while underground hip-hop’s misogyny and regressive themes tend to get ignored. Muja Messiah shatters the implicit split between the two camps, deftly crafting a hip-hop masterpiece that combines indie’s nuance and honesty with mainstream’s swagger and charisma. Muja makes sure to differentiate himself from the area’s famed emo rap while continuing to rep his city hard (Messiah has the letters MPLS—spelled out in guns, swords, and dollar signs—tattooed on his neck). In lead single “Get Fresh,” he takes on those who are “backstabbin’ my city / like it’s all backpackin’ and hippies / like it ain’t crackin’ in my city.” With a winsome flow, Muja covers everything: cocaine deals and money-fetish materialism, progressive politics and introspective thoughts, dark reminiscences, well-spun punchlines. The album is refreshingly multifaceted, exactly the kick in the pants hip-hop needed. – AV Club -The Onion- Best of The Decade$15.00 ADVANCE TICKETS / $18.00 AT THE DOOR

Communist Daughter, Alpha Consumer @ Triple Rock

If you’ve checked out Dosh, Andrew Bird, Fog, Fat Kid Wednesdays, Happy Apple, The James Buckley Trio, or about a dozen other local bands, chances are you’ve heard at least one member of local quasi-supergroup Alpha Consumer. Jeremy Ylvisaker and Michael Lewis have logged some serious miles this year in Andrew Bird’s backing band, and J.T. Bates is a drummer for several Twin Cities projects, but the trio’s first passion is this loud, cocksure rock band. – Jake Mohan

David Daniell and Douglas McCombs first met in early 2006 while touring as members of Rhys Chatham’s
six-guitar Die Donnergötter band. Following that tour, the two spent several months trading albums and
discussing making music together; they began their musical collaboration when Daniell moved from New
York to Chicago later that year to study pedal steel guitar. These humble beginnings do little to reflect the depth and breadth of each of their talents; both are
highly-respected musicians within their circles. Over the years Daniell has collaborated with many
notable musicians, including Loren Connors, Rhys Chatham, Tim Barnes, Jeph Jerman, Thurston Moore,
Greg Davis, and Jonathan Kane, as well as releasing numerous albums under his own name and with his
band San Agustin on labels such as Table of the Elements and Family Vineyard. McCombs is more often
seen wielding a bass guitar, whether as a member of Eleventh Dream Day, the acoustic collective Pullman,
or the pioneering and inimitable Tortoise; in his role as the driving force behind Brokeback; or through his
varied work with the likes of Tom Ze, Azita Youseffi, Will Oldham, Yo La Tengo, and Calexico

Russian Circles @ Triple Rock
RUSSIAN CIRCLES
RUSSIAN CIRCLES (Suicide Squeeze Records)
A three piece instrumental band, Russian Circles bring something new to the table with narrative and linear songs. These songs stream through themes and by no means build on just one repeating idea which flow seamlessly from beautiful soft ambience to truly defined melody to massively thick heaviness with a gradual progression that never leaves you lost.
YOUNG WIDOWS
Steeped in dark, brooding grooves and moody post-punk, the three members of Young Widows have reverb-drenched inspiration of Regulator Watts/Hoover to the bass and drums lock-groove perfected by Shellac and the Jesus Lizard. The band gladly wears influences on their sleeve.
*Update* – Young Widows has dropped off the bill and so far have yet to offer an explanation..
